Thiruvandanapuram, Kerala: Controversial Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) MR Ajith Kumar is likely to be promoted to the DGP grade as the Kerala cabinet on Wednesday accepted recommendations of the screening committee. Ajith Kumar, who was removed from duties of law and order in October, had faced serious allegations from Nilambur MLA PV Anvar. The ADGP is currently facing vigilance inquiry regarding alleged wealth amassment beyond his means.
The controversial officer is now solely in charge of the Armed Battalion, as ADGP Manoj Abraham, who was in charge of Intelligence, was given the responsibility of Law and Order back then. The allegations against Ajith Kumar include links with gold smugglers and the wealth accumulation beyond his means, in addition to connections with RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale at Thrissur and holding discussions with the BJP ideological arm’s national leader Ram Madhav in Thiruvananthapuram.
The former LDF MLA, who cut his link with the front following the alleged disregard by the government on his allegations against the police chiefs, had said he lost belief in the left front.

However, as per media reports, the ADGP would be promoted to the DGP grade by July next year after the retirement of incumbent State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb. The screening committee had reportedly observed that there were no cases pending against him as of now and he is not under suspension, justifying his elevation to the state police chief.
Notably, the Kerala government had ordered the setting up of a high-level inquiry team to investigate allegations against Ajith Kumar, but the team had concluded that the allegations were not backed by adequate proof. However, the report of the high-level team had adverse remarks against the ADGP regarding his secret meetings with RSS national leaders, according to a report by The New Indian Express.

The report reportedly mentioned that the meetings damaged the reputation of the force and the act of the officer was an infringement of the service rules. It also pointed out that the officer did not inform the government before meeting the RSS leaders. The wealth accumulation allegations are currently being probed by the vigilance.
