PV Anvar, an LDF independent MLA from Kerala’s Nilambur, has been in the news for the past couple of weeks, creating headaches for the Left government in the state levelling allegations against several high-profile figures, including the chief minister’s Political Secretary, P Sasi and state police chiefs. The allegations unleashed by the MLA have crippled the Left government, especially at a time when the assembly election is scheduled for the year 2026.
Anwar’s allegations spread across a range of issues against the chief minister’s political secretary and ADGP and includes having misused the police to intercept smuggled gold outside Karipur airport and steal part of the seized gold. The allegations became more vivid when the left-backed MLA aired a leaked audio clip of a purported conversation between him and Sujith Das, a Superintendent of Police, causing the latter’s suspension. The conversation further raised suspicions about the police chiefs, including the role of P. Sasi.
The Nilambur MLA also alleged that Ajit Kumar was responsible for BJP getting a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, noting the ADGP’s meeting with RSS state chief. He also claimed that both discussed to disrupt the Thrissur Pooram. “Why can’t the Chief Minister understand the true colours of Sasi? No one has an opinion about him. Only the Chief Minister has a different view,” the MLA said.
The deterrent Anvar continued to raise allegations, including another video purported conversation with two gold carriers. The smugglers in the video claim they had transported 900 grams of gold, but the police reported only 540 grams to Customs and later only approximately 320 grams.
When the chief minister chose to defend his PA against Anvar’s allegations, the MLA turned against the Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of betrayal, despite considering the CPIM leader in place of his father.
The Nilambur MLA is known for being outspoken in the state political landscape. The MLA’s relationship with the party was stained after he continued to raise voice against the chief minister’s PA, among others, in public. The MLA had expressed his disillusionment with the chief minister about not taking action on his allegations and for choosing to defend his PA, one of the men the MLA leveled allegations against.

Following the public slamming against party’s top brass and the government by the MLA, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on September 27 severed its links with Independent legislator. Rejected by the party and the chief minister, the irked MLA convened a press conference and accused the chief minister of favoritism and stated he was aware of the smuggling operation and could not take action.
Asserting his departure from the LDF coalition, the MLA stated that he would not participate in the LDF legislature party meeting and would not resign as MLA, underscoring that the position he holds was bestowed upon him by the people. Unleashing further attacks on the chief minister, Anwar alleged that Pinaray’s popularity has plummeted to zero and said he was not aware of the irregularities occurring right under his rule. He also called on the High Court to investigate the allegations raised by him and the assets of P Sasi and ADGP Ajith Kumar.

Stating that Pinarayi is unfit to hold the home department, Anwar demanded him to resign. Anvar also warned that if the situation continues without introspection, Pinarayi would be the last chief minister from CPM in Kerala. “The Chief Minister was once a fiery sun, but now that fire has dimmed,” adding that the ADGP refers to the chief minister as an uncle.
However, the party heads have come out against Anvar, saying that the MLA’s persisted criticism of the party and government, adding that he might be aiding the party’s adversaries. CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan rejected Anwar, stating that the baseless claims of the MLA could not damage the chief minister’s reputation. CPM Central Committee member AK Balan alleged that Anwar is resorting to inflammatory tactics, saying it was unexpected and indicative of a deeper agenda.
Stating that it is for the people of Kerala to discuss the allegation, the MLA issued a Google Form along with questionaries, asking people several questions and scribing their opinion. He asked several things, including the communal influence in the police under the left government, sabotage of sensational cases, and eventually questioning the credibility of the chief minister.
Brewing the political heat of the controversies, a case has now been registered against the Nilambur MLA for illegally tapping and leaking the phone conversations of senior police officers, potentially compromising public safety. The FIR mentioned that the accused MLA also made these leaks public through visual media with the deliberate intention of inciting hatred and fear among the public and provoking a riot.
However, the defiant MLA has been rallying public support, attending public events, and continuing to raise the allegations.
The opposition Congress and BJP have called for an investigation into the allegations, terming them serious. Notably, the allegations come at a time when the state is bracing for the assembly elections in 2026. And Anwar’s public conferences, statements, and controversy have rocked the party, with the potential to inflict the party’s prospect in the election.
