Kuttichira By-Election: Voting Held Today, Result To Be Declared Tomorrow

Voting for the Kuttichira ward of the Kozhikode Corporation, Keralam, was held on Monday, September 28, with voters casting their ballots in the by-election to Ward 59.

Polling began at 7 am and will end at 6 pm. The Kerala State Election Commission has scheduled counting for Tuesday, September 29.

The by-election was necessitated after IUML councillor Fathima Thahliya vacated the ward following her election to the Kerala Assembly from Perambra.

The contest has drawn attention as one of the closely watched local body by-elections in the state.

Farseena Arakkal is contesting for the United Democratic Front (UDF), while T.T. Jamsheena is the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate. The BJP has also fielded K. Jiji, along with two independent candidates.

Polling was held at eight booths across three polling stations in the ward. A local holiday was declared in Kuttichira on polling day for government offices and educational institutions in the division.

The election campaign had seen an intense contest between the UDF and LDF, with both fronts seeking to establish their position in the ward. The result will be announced after the votes are counted on Tuesday.

The contest has attracted attention because Kuttichira has traditionally been an important ward for the IUML-led UDF.

In the 2025 corporation election, Fathima Thahliya won the seat for the UDF securing 66.75 per cent of the votes and a margin of 2,273 votes.

This time, however, the seat is being contested with a new UDF candidate following Thahliya’s move to the Assembly. The LDF is looking to make gains in the ward, while the UDF is seeking to retain the seat.
