Nilambur, Malappuram: The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has announced its candidate for the upcoming Nilambur by-election scheduled for June 19. Necessitated by the resignation of CPI(M)-supported independent MLA PV Anvar in January this year, the by-poll is going to be tough for the left party, given the allegations raised by the former MLA against some of the ruling government functionaries.
The former Thrippunithura MLA, a CPI(M)’s firebrand leader, who gained huge popularity among the public for his oratory skills and by appearing in channel discussions clearly conveying his views, is believed to be a suitable fit for the heated Nilambur by-election. The Congress -led United Democratic Front (UDF) had earlier named Aryadan Shoukath, son of Aryadan Muhammed, for the constituency.

The CPI(M)’s decision to field its own candidate marks a notable departure from its earlier stance where the party would usually support independent candidates. The party fielded its candidate for the first time in 58 years as it chose a CPI(M) leader to contest in the Nilambur by-elections. The decision was taken at the CPI(M) state secretariat meeting.
During the 2021 assembly elections, the CPI(M)’s firebrand young leader lost his sitting seat in Thrippunithura. The candidature of the high-profile left candidate is also believed to be part of the manifestation of a strong political fight in the constituency where the ruling front is eyeing to take public trust into confidence in the constituency, unaffected by the waves of allegations made by PV Anvar against chief minister and top police officers in the state.

Anvar is expected to announce his decision soon. While the UDF hesitates to accommodate Anwar, it is reported that the former MLA would either choose to contest as an independent or as a Trinamool Congress candidate.
