Kerala: Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday (January 13) announced P V Anvar as the State Convenor of Kerala State Trinamool Congress. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee approved the name. Anvar is an Independent MLA from Nilambur in Malappuram district. The controversial MLA who parted from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) joined TMC on Friday, January 10.
After joining the TMC, Anvar resigned as legislator and submitted his resignation letter to Speaker AN Shamseer on Monday. His move to quit MLA post intended to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law. As per parliamentary procedure, a MLA who wins as an independent candidate can come under the ambit of anti-defection law if he joins a political party later.

The 57-year-old MLA has nearly a year and a half remaining in his term. The State legislative assembly’s five-year tenure will end only in May 2026.
Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation, Anvar said that he will not contest the by-election in Nilambur and announced his support to the Congress -led UDF (United Democratic Front). Continuing further, he said that he wanted to see the end of the Pinarayi Vijayan regime. “Its countdown begins today,” Anvar said.
Anvar’s relationship with state CPI(M) leadership worsened since September last year when he raised serious allegations against Chief Minister’s political secretary P Sasi and two IPS officers regarding various issues, especially their involvement in looting smuggled gold at Kozhikode International Airport. He had also criticised Pinarayi Vijayan of leading an ivory tower existence far removed from the struggles of the common people.

Following, the CPI(M) broke off with Anvar and ignored his allegations. The businessman-turned-politician Anvar won the Nilambur seat twice as a LDF-backed Independent in 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections.
