Wayanad district of Kerala has some of the dense forests in India and thus it is home to a wide variety of birds and animals. Though many of the hilly regions are stripped for coffee and tea plantations, certain areas still exist where sunlight finds it arduous to reach the forest floor.
But this place has witnessed an increase in human-elephant conflict on a daily basis, lately. The wild elephant attack on the common man has become regular news emerging from the region.
A video of one such elephant attack from the Bandipur forest area has gone viral on social media. The 20-second-long video was shot by a man in the car while fleeing from the area. In the video, two men were seen being chased by an elephant and unfortunately, one fell, but luckily escaped from the attack of the elephant as it chose to retreat. The incident occurred when the two men got down from their car to click selfie. The incident has left one injured.
Muhammed Zubair posted the video with the caption, “OMG! The person is very lucky to have survived the Elephant attack at Bandipur-Wayanad Tiger Reserve. #Bandipur”.

The viral video once again questioned implementing restrictions in forest areas to protect wildlife. Users on social media also slammed the two men for venturing out of the car in a forest region.
Due to the increased human-wildlife conflict, several lives have been lost on both sides. Despite the public outcry against straying of the wild animals into human habitations, the Kerala government has failed to take effective measures to protect the people, often the farmers who live on the outskirts of the forest. Wayanad and Palakkad districts are particularly prone to wild animal attacks, but all 13 districts of Kerala except Alappuzha have a history of such attacks, including damage to crops.
