
Muslim League Lays Foundation Stones For 105 Houses For Wayanad Landslide Victims
Wayanad, Kerala: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) chief Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal laid the foundation stone for at least 105 houses for the survivors of the devastating Wayanad landslides on Wednesday, April 9. The construction of the houses will be completed within eight months, according to the Muslim League state president.
The rehabilitation project will be set in 11-acre land at Muttil-Thrikkaipetta road near Meppadi. For every family, a 1000-sq ft house will be built on eight cents of land. The houses will be designed in a way that it would leave scope for further expansion.

After landslide hit Wayanad last year, IUML had collected Rs 36 crore through crowdfunding for the rehabilitation of the landslides victims on July 30 last year. Thangal had informed that the party had also received 2.31 acres of land as donation for the construction of houses for the disaster survivours. The party had released around Rs 1.4 crore as emergency assistance in the aftermath of the catastrophe. The party had also promised that it would help near 50 people to get jobs abroad with the association of the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre.
On March 27, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan laid the foundation stone for a model township for the rehabilitations of those affected by the horrific landslides. Aiming to provide permanent housing and infrastructure for the victims, the government’s project need to be developed on 64 hectares of land acquired from Elstone Tea Estate near Kalpetta.
While speaking at the foundation event, the chief minister had slammed the Union Government for not providing any help to the rehabilitations efforts of the state. In February this year, Centre gave a Rs 529-crore interest-free loan to Wayanad, drawing criticism from the state government and opposition parties due to the stringent conditions.

The landslide that struck Chooralmala and Mundakkai in 2024 was one of the worst disasters the state has witnessed, causing massive devastation, claiming 266 lives, and nearly 200 people still reported missing. A total of 795 families—comprising 2,569 individuals—were displaced and housed in temporary relief camps, rental accommodations, and government facilities.
