Kerala: Rahul Mamkoottathil, a regular Congress face on TV debates and public functions, has been elected as the new Kerala state president of the Indian Youth Congress. Hailing from Pathanamthitta and rose to become a popular young faces of the Grand Old Party in Kerala, Rahul garnered a total of 2,21,986 votes in the party”s internal election. His opponent, Abin Varkey, also a prominent face on Congress- television programs, trailed behind with 1,68,588 votes.

The internal election also revealed that ten contestants, including Abin Varkey and Aritha Babu, would be appointed as state vice presidents of the youth wing. Notably, both Rahul and Abin held the position of general secretaries in the previous state committee led by Shafi Parambil, a fact that underlines their experience and familiarity with the party”s workings.

In the intricate landscape of Congress” internal politics, Rahul aligned with the “A” group, known for its loyalty to the late Oommen Chandy, while Abin represented the “I” group led by Ramesh Chennithala. Expressing his emotions on the election triumph, Rahul lamented the absence of Oommen Chandy, stating, “Oommen Chandy sir would have been so happy to see my victory.” He went on to emphasize that the enthusiasm generated by this win would be translated into active protests against both the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Pinarayi Vijayan administration in Kerala. According to Rahul, both governments are engaged in a competition to establish themselves as the most anti-people regimes.
