Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is the sitting TMC MP representing the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in the Parliament. In the 18th Lok Sabha elections, Abhishek Banerjee will represent his current constituency for the third time if he wins this election. Abhijit Das is the BJP candidate from Damond Harbour. The date of voting in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency election 2024 is June 1, 2024 (phase – 7).
Banerjee has been the president of Trinamool Youth Congress and currently the national general secretary of the party. Abhishek Banerjee who was the youngest MP in the Lok Sabha in 2014 faced allegations in the death of Debashish Acharya who was found dead in mysterious conditions. Debashish once slapped Abhishek Banerjee in a public meeting however the matter was said to be resolved later. But Acharya”s family has accused Banerjee of the former”s death. In 2021, Banerjee”s name came in the coal smuggling scam.
During his current tenure, Abhishek Banerjee”s Lok Sabha attendance remained meager as he attended only 15% of the lower house proceedings. He participated only in 2 debates once on Union Budget and on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. He asked a total of 84 questions on health, minority affairs, law and justice, tourism and defense etc.
The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha comprises of 7 assembly regions namely Diamond Harbour, Falta, Satgachhia, Bishnupur, Maheshtala, Budge and Metiaburuz. All the assembly seats were won by the AITC in the last elections. Earlier the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency has been a CPI (M) bastion for decades.
In 2019, the total voter turn out in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency was 81.98%. Abhishek Banerjee secured 791127 votes (46%) in the constituency while the BJP candidate secured 27% of the total votes.
Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency is a general category parliament seat situated in South 24 parganas. With a significant muslim population diamond harbour constitutency remain a tough task for the BJP candidate. The SC, ST and Muslim population are 20.19%, 0.04% and 39.5% respectively. The rural and urban population in the constituency is 78.83% and 21.18%
