Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Expresses Regrets Over His “Foreigner” Comments

Edited by Dileep Kumar S

West Bengal Congress chief and member of parliament Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has expressed regrets for his recent comments targeting Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien. The controversy arose when Derek O’Brien held Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury responsible for the failure of an alliance between Trinamool Congress and Congress in West Bengal.

In an attempt to counter O’Brien’s accusations, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury referred to Derek O’Brien as a ‘foreigner’ during a statement to the reporters. This remark has sparked outrage and criticism.

However, in a recent development, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has taken a conciliatory approach, conveying his regrets for the choice of words. In a statement, he mentioned, “I conveyed my regrets to Mr. Derek O’Brien for a word inadvertently uttered by me on him as a FOREIGNER.”

Earlier this week, Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said that her party will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state alone, dismissing a possibility with an alliance with the grand old party.

Derek O’Brien has also joined his leader and said:

After the general elections, if the Congress does its job and defeats the BJP on a substantial number of seats, the Trinamool Congress will very much be a part of the front that believes and fights for the Constitution,” Mr O’Brien told reporters.

In response to Bengal chief minister’s comment, Congress party general secretary Jairam Ramesh asserted that the opposition bloc INDIA “cannot be imagined without Mamata Banerjee”.
