Agnimitra Paul: A Fashion-Designer Turned Politian From A Family Of Doctors And Intellectuals

Agnimitra Paul the fashion designer turned politician is a serving member of the West Bengal legislative assembly from Asansol South. Paul is the president of the West Bengal unit of BJP Mahila Morcha. She has received the BJP ticket from Medinipur to run for the Lok Sabha elections in phase 6 on May 25, 2024. In opposite to Paul, TMC has fielded June Maliah to run for the elections in the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency.

Agnimitra Paul joined the BJP in March 2019 and she succeeded Locket Chatterjee to become president of BJP Mahila Morcha. She defeated TMC”s Saayoni Ghosh in the WB legislative assembly elections in 2021 in Asansol Dakshin.

Recently on the Arvind Kejriwal bail and celebration by AAP leaders, Paul called Kejriwal a dacoit, thugbaaz, and hypocrite. In 2020, a police complaint was filed against Agnimitra Paul over her alleged derogatory remarks for the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that she has asked her supporters to “rape women for entertainment”. In the recent controversy of teacher”s recruitment by 2016 Staff Selection Commission, Ms Paul demanded the arrest of West Bengal CM.

In 2019, BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh won the Medinipur constituency by securing 685433 votes. AITC”s Manas Ranjan Bhunia lost the election to Ghosh with 596481 votes. The total voter turnout in Medinipur in 2019 was 84.24%.

Medinipur constitute of Egra, Dantan, Keshiary, Kharagpur Sadar, Narayangarh, Kharagpur and Medinipur. In the last assembly elections 6 out of the 7assembly seats were won by the TMC candidates and only 1 was wone by BJP.

The Medinipur Lok Sabha Constituency has been a CPI stronghold for decades however since 2014 TMC and BJP has won the general elections respectively.

The Lok Sabha election result 2024 will be announced on June 4, 2024.
