Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its first candidate list on March 3 after much deliberations and discussions in the party leadership. The party nominated state Kisan Morcha President Darshan Singh Chaudhary for Madhya Pradesh”s Hoshangabad constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Mr Chaudhary was born in a farmer family as the fourth son of Narayan Singh, and is a resident of Chandan village of Bankhedi village of Narmadapuram district. The 48-year-old unmarried has been with the saffron party for a long time. He joined the politics by beginning to work with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the BJP’s ideological organisation. Mr Chaudhary has a strong hold among the farmer”s community.

Since 1989, the voters of the Hoshangabad constituency have stood with the BJP except for one term. In 2009, the Indian National Congress’s Uday Pratap Singh wrested power from the saffron party with a narrow majority. However, during the 2014 general election, Mr Pratap Singh was re-elected on the BJP ticket and has been since representing the constituency. The BJP’s vote share has increased over the past decades, with its MP Pratap Singh securing 69 per cent votes in the 2019 general election.

The party has changed its candidate for the constituency this time by picking Mr Chaudhary who has extensive organisational experience. Currently, he is serving as the president of the BJP state Kisan Morcha since 2021. It is learnt that Mr Chaudhary was picked given his organisational performance.

However, with the Kisan leader getting a ticket for the Hoshangabad seat, the party believe that he can secure a comfortable victory in the constituency.
