BJP candidate BY Raghavendra has won Karnataka’s Shimoga constituency by a margin of 24,3715 votes. The BJP Shimoga candidate is the son of former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa.
Notably, the Shimoga constituency is one of the saffron party’s citadel in the state, and during the 2019 general elections, the BJP leader won with more than four lakh majority. Raghavendra was contesting for his third terms, and his father and former chief minister has been representing the seat before him.
In his debut election in 2009, BY Raghavendra defeated the late former chief minister and Congress leader S Bangarappa by a margin of 52,893 votes. He also emerged victorious in the 2018 by-election against then Minister for Education and Janata Dal (Secular) leader S Madhu Bangarappa.
As counting progresses, the NDA is leading in 293 seats while the INDIA bloc is leading in 233. The result is marked by a significant change from what the pollsters predicted earlier in the exit poll results
