Congress today announced four more candidates for Punjab Lok Sabha constituencies. The party has fielded Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa in Gurdaspur and Kulbir Singh Zira in Khadoor Sahib. In Anandpur Sahib, Vijay Inder Singla will be party’s nominee while Amrinder Singh Brar (Raja Warring) will be Congress candidate in Ludhiana. Congress is contesting the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab in alliance with its INDIA bloc partner Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress is yet to announce candidate for one more seat in the state.

With Monday’s list, the party has announced candidates for 12 of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. In the meeting held on Saturday, the latest names of the candidates were finalized at the party’s Central Election Committee.

State President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring will take on sitting MP Ranveet Singh Bittu in the Ludhiana seat. From the Anandpur Sahib seat, the Congress has fielded former cabinet minister Vijay Inder Singla. Former Union minister Manish Tewari was earlier a Member of Parliament from his seat. But this time the Congress has fielded Tewari from the Chandigarh seat.

The BJP-led National Democratic Front is aiming to seek a record third term under PM Modi. In this election, they have targeted to win 400 seats. The ruling alliance is challenged by the opposition parties led by the Congress under the banner of the INDIA bloc.

Reacting to Warring’s candidature from Ludhiana, BJP candidate Bittu said: “From the very beginning, it was abundantly clear that Congress had no faith in Ludhiana’s local leadership. That is why now they have pitted an outsider in an important constituency like Ludhiana. All he would do is some morning walks in parks and reaching out to some bigwig industrialists. He would never be able to connect to the common masses of Ludhiana. It is a pity that the Congress could not find a local face for Ludhiana. They have already accepted their defeat,” reports Indian Express.
