Sarbananda Sonowal, one of the most prominent political figure of Assam, won the Lok Sabha election 2024 from the Dibrugarh constituency. Reigning over the constituency for a decade since 2014, the BJP has again marked its victory as Sarbananda Sonowal has secured 6,93,762 votes, pushing behind Lurinjyoti Gogoi of AJP.
As the constituency witnessed a triangular battle between Sarbananda Sonowal of the BJP, Lurinjyoti Gogoi of AJP, and Manoj Dhanowar of the AAP, Sarbananda Sonowal etched his victory with a margin of 2,79,321 votes defeating Lurinjyoti Gogoi of AJP who secured 4,14,441 votes.
Sarbarnanda Sonowal is the Cabinet Minister of Port, Shipping and Waterways of Assam and for Chief Minister of Assam. For his fight against illegal migration, he was fondly known as ‘Jatiya Nayak’.
Mr. Sonowal started his political journey in student politics, as the president of the powerful All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) from 1992 to 1999. He made his political debut by joining the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and was elected as MLA in the Moran constituency in 2001. Following his political journey he won the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Dibrugarh and is also known to be the first non-Congress candidate to win the seat. He played an important role in the illegal immigrant issue of Assam by taking it to the Supreme Court, where the court declared the Illegal Migrants (Determination By Tribunal) Act (IMDT Act) unconstitutional in 2005. For his fight against illegal migration, he was fondly known as ‘Jatiya Nayak’
In 2016 through his remarkable victory in Majuli, he marked himself as the first Chief Minister of Assam from the BJP by securing 67.53% which was 71,436 of the total votes. In the 2021 assembly elections, Mr Sonowal was re-elected from Majuli. Despite the BJP’s victory, Mr Sonowal resigned as chief minister and proposed Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name as his successor. Dibrugarh was previously represented by Rameshwar Teli of BJP, who won against Congress with a total of 659,583 votes.
Looking at the political history of the constituency, Dibrugarh, one of the Lok Sabha constituencies consists of 9 assembly segments. The BJP and the Congress parties are the main parties of the constituency. After being ruled by the Indian National Congress for decades Dibrugarh politics found a turn in the 2004 Lok Sabha election, when AGP made its entry through Sarbananda Sonowal’s victory against the congress. Later in the 2009 election, Congress retrieved its seat through the victory of INC candidate Paban Singh Ghatowar. The 2014 election marked the entry of the BJP in Dibrugarh, as the candidate Rameshwar Teli won the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
