Congress candidate Kuldeep Indora reclaimed the seat from BJP in Rajasthan’s Ganganagar constituency. He defeated BJP’s young candidate, Priyanka Balan Meghwal. This victory reflects the discontent of the people of Ganganagar as well as the people of Rajasthan towards the BJP-led government and its policies.
Kuldeep Indora won by securing 726,492 votes, which constitute 51.4 percent of total votes registered in the constituency. He also secured a majority of 88,153 votes. This victory marked an end to the successful run of BJP over the last two terms.
However, Priyanka Balan Meghwal emerged as a strong contender for the grand old party since she was able to maintain tough competition and secured 6,38,339 votes, which counts for 45.16 percent of total votes.
Kuldeep Indora and Congress succeeded in addressing the needs and highlighting the issues with the BJP-led government in the state and the centre. The issues such as availability of job opportunities, farmers’ protest, approach of BJP towards farmers, brutal crackdown on the farmers’ agitation, and neglect towards the needs of farmers in the last 10 years, were successfully addressed in the constituency by the Congress.
The Ganganagar constituency comprises about 34 percent of the Scheduled Castes (SC) and 1 percent of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the total population. The voter turnout in the constituency is 66.59 percent. In 2019, it was 75 percent. Compared to the previous elections, this time there has been a drastic decrease in turnout. Out of the eight assembly segments, five are ruled by Congress, two by BJP, and the last one by an independent candidate.
