The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the poll dates for the Lok Sabha election today. The Assembly poll dates in Jammu and Kashmir and Odissa are also likely to be announced. The previous general election date was announced on March 10, 2019 and the election was held between April 11 and May 19. Similarly, this year the polling is likely to be held in April and May.
The 17th Lok Sabha tenure is scheduled to end on 16 June 2024.
While the BJP has finalised the names of over 250 candidates, the Congress has announced the names of 82 candidates. Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the third term will contest from Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Congress stalwart Rahul Gandhi has been named as the candidate from the Wayanad constituency of Kerala. It is unknown whether he would contest in Amethi of Uttar Pradesh.
After days of hectic discussions on conducting the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election simultaneously along with Lok Sabha polls with political parties, the Election Commission is likely to announce the poll dates today.
The chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar along with other officials arrived on Monday for a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The panel members have interacted with delegations from the National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (CPIM), Congress and Aam Admi Party.
Along with Jammu and Kashmir, the assembly poll date of Odissa is also likely to be announced today. In recent years, the state has witnessed a major power shift in the state and it has emerged as a significant battleground in Indian politics. As per the trend, Odisha’s Lok Sabha elections are held in the initial phases, aligning with other eastern states. As of 2019, the polling took place during the early stages of the mega elections. And the trend is likely to continue in 2024. April is earmarked as the expected timeframe for the upcoming elections.
