The doctor turned actor turned politician Dr Amol Kohle, who is known for the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sambhaji Maharaj in dramas and serials is the current MP from Shirur Lok Sabha constituency. The former MP recently joined the Nationalist Congress Party.
He made the headlines across the country when his speech on the consecration of Ram Lalla and the current state of politics and media went viral on social media platforms. He after the split of NCP decided to stay with Sharad Pawar. In this election, Dr Kolhe faced Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil as the opponent of Ajit Pawar-led NCP. He has earlier in the 2019 election defeated Shivajirao when the latter was nominated by the Uddhav Thackeray-led undivided Shiv Sena.
The Pune born actor is an MBBS from the King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College in Mumbai. Kolhe is the first actor from the Marathi film industry to be elected to public office.
Kolhe has triggered rumors of him joining the saffron party after he met with the Union Minister Amit Shah in 2022. However, the actor-turned-politician later came up clarifying that he has met with the BJP leader regarding his cinema and to seek that a saffron flag be erected on the Shivneri fort in his constituency.
The sitting MP has also played the role of Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi in the film ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’.
His serial Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji which depicts the life of Sambhaji Maharaj was aired before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and was a major hit. It earned him a massive following in the rural areas. During the poll campaigns, it was not uncommon to see people fall at Kolhe’s feet.
Kolhe was born in Narayangaon. He completed his schooling at a villaage school and Apte Prashala in Pune.
