Priya Saha, The ‘Street Fighter’ To Fight For Lok Sabha Seat From Bolpur

BJP has released the first list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024. The list includes 28 women candidates including Priya Saha, who will contest the elections from Bolpur, West Bengal. Notably, Bolpur is a SC reserved seat. Priya is running for the Parliamentary election for the first time.

Priya graduated in Sanskrit from Saithiya Avedananda Mahavidyalaya under Burdwan University and remained active in university politics. In 2021, Priya contested election as BJP candidate for Saithia Assembly constituency.

The 35-year-old bold and young politician is famously known as ‘Street Fighter’. She had earlier contested election twice for the State Legislative Assembly in 2016 and 2021 from Sainthia assembly constituency in Birbhum District. But she was defeated twice by the Nilavati Saha of Trinamool Congress. She was allegedly threatened by TMC to step back from fighting elections.

Her political career did not start with BJP, but with Congress. In 2015, Priya Saha contested for Municipal polls and became councillor from Ward Number 3.

After her name was announced in the BP list, BJP leader Anupam Hazra, made a blunt Facebook post about the candidature of Priya Saha. “You can”t even guess when a deal of crores of rupees will be made with the TMC at the last minute to give a weak candidate to the winning seat. You are busy risking your life to write walls for the party!”, he wrote.
