With the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh declaring their 16 candidates for the upcoming Lakh Sabha election, the party has fielded the current MLA Ravidas Mehrotra in the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency.
Mr Mehrotra is one of the veteran leaders of the SP and has also served as a cabinet minister for health and family welfare in the Samajwadi government after defeating BJP’s Suresh Kumar Srivastava in 2012. But, Mr. Mehrotra in the 2017 assembly election suffered a defeat against BJP’s Brajesh Pathak by a margin of around 50,000 votes.
However, the SP veteran made a great comeback in the 2022 assembly election by defeating BJP’s Rajnish Kumar Gupta from Lucknow Central constituency. He could secure a margin of about 11,000 votes, a fair margin amid the BJP wave in the state.
Lucknow Central constitutes part of the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency and in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, it was the BJP candidate Rajnath Singh who won the seat from the Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 347302 votes. He defeated the Samajwadi party’s candidate, Poonam Shatrughan Sinha. According to a report, the current minister Raj Nath Sing will be Mr. Mehrotra’s rival candidate from the BJP for the upcoming general election.
The constituency with 1949956 voters had a voter turnout of 53.06%. in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Mr Mehrotra, the sitting MLA from the Lucknow central assembly constituency in which the Muslim, OBC and SC population forms a good number may face a tough battle with the BJP’s sitting cabinet minister Rajnath Singh.
