Vadodara BJP MP Nominated For 2024 Lok Sabha Election Declines To Contest

Edited by Fazal Rahman Chembulangad

BJP MP representing Vadodara in Gujarat Ranjanben Bhatt has declined to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections after the saffron party announced her ticket when it released its candidates list. The MP said that she is unwilling to contest due to personal reasons.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the two-time BJP MP wrote, “I, Ranjanben Dhananjay Bhatt, am unwilling to contest the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 due to my reasons.”

She was fielded by the BJP for the third time in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Ranjanben Bhatt was first fielded in a 2014 by-election and emerged victorious with a considerable majority and then she secured more than five lakh majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the constituency.

The MP’s decision followed a campaign in Gujarat against the candidature of Ranjanben Bhatt. The banner saw criticising the MP’s renomination from the constituency.

The poster campaign reportedly reads, “Modi tere se ber nahin, Ranjan teri kher nahi (roughly translated as “Modi, we don’t have any differences with you, but Ranjan, we will not spare you”) and “Will the BJP, so high on success, put up anybody as a candidate?”.

Some local leaders had expressed their displeasure over the ticket given to Ranjanben Bhatt for the third consecutive term.

Earlier, the BJP had to suspend the national vice-president of the women’s wing Dr Jyoti Pandya following her open rebellion against the party’s nomination of Ranjanben Bhatt. The withdrawal however seems to mitigate the rising dissent in the party regarding Bhatt’s renomination.
