Congress Spokesperson Lodges Complaint Against Rajat Sharma

Congress spokesperson Dr Ragini Nayak today lodged a criminal complaint against the India TV editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma under Section 294 and Section 509 of the IPC. Ragini Nayak alleged that the editor used abusive language against her during during a live debate on the 2024 Lok Sabha election results.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here today, Dr Nayak stated that during a TV debate on the day of counting on June 4, Sharma used abusive language against her. She disclosed that the video with the abusive language was viral on social media.

Meanwhile, the Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh demanded an unconditional apology from Sharma saying, “Rajat Sharma is a famous media personality. He has his own political leanings, but for a key spokesperson of the Congress, who is a woman, to use such derogatory language is completely unacceptable and should be strongly condemned. There is an urgent need for an unconditional public apology in this matter.”

Referring to the complaint, and its sections, Nayak quoted the Section 294, saying “whoever to the annoyance of others does any obscene act in any public place, or sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months, or with fine, or with both”.

Section 509, she said is about outraging modesty of a woman “whoever, intending to insult the modesty of a woman, utters any word, makes any sound or gesture, or exhibits any object, intending that such word or sound shall be heard, or that such gesture or object shall be seen, by such woman, or intrudes upon the privacy of such woman, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and also with fine”.

Referring to the threats of defamation case by India TV, Ragini Nayak said that she was not scared of anything and that is why she had lodged a criminal complaint against Sharma.
