Over 200 Space Start-Ups Were Registered In The Last 10 Years: PMO

S Jothimani, the Congress MP from Tamil Nadu, asked about the details of the government’s support to space technology start-ups and the state of Public Private Partnership (PPP) for the advancement of space technology. To the unstarred question, Dr. Jitendra Singh, minister of state tabled the answers to the Lok Sabha.

The Congress leaders demanded answers about the details of the number of private startups; proposals of PPP, space technology start-ups approaching ISRP, and the Union Government’s plan for a policy to support such start-ups.

In the reply, the minister Singh said, the till now a total of 229 space start-ups have registered under the space technology category in comparison to only 1 in 2014.

While answering the PPP proposals, the minister said that the Space Commission, in its 152nd meeting, has approved the framework to work upon the Earth Observation (EO) satellite constellations by NGEs through the PPP model. NSIL has floated a proposal to launch vehicle production in the PPP model.

The minister said further that ISRO is facilitating  a vibrant space ecosystem through IN-SPACe.

  • The organisation supported a suborbital mission ‘Agnibaan SOrTeD’ conducted by Agnikul Cosmos, an Indian start-up.
  • ISRO also provided technical support to Skryroot Aerospace launched a maidan sub-orbital flight ‘Vikram – S’.

While answering to the policy support to private entities the minister informed that

  • the space sector has been liberalised and private sector allowed to carry out end to end space activities.
  • IN-SPACe under the department of space is promoting the activities of Non-Government Entities (NGEs) in Space Sector.
  • Indian Space Policy – 2023 support private entities participation
  • A revised FDI policy for space sector has been brought up
  • Seed fund scheme, pricing support policy, mentorship support, design lab for NGEs, skill development, technology transfer to NGEs, IN-SPACe Digital platform are the policy measures to support start-ups and private sector
  • Encouraging state governments for dedicated end-to-end manufacturing clusters for Space System
  • Enhancing international outreach
