As per the police report and the statement of Chakma’s brother, Michael Chakma, Angel was doing shopping in a local market when a group of youths hurled racial slurs at them, calling them ‘Chinese’. Responding to them, Angel said, “We are not Chinese, we are Indians. What certificate do we need to show to prove our Indian identity?”

Angel’s body was flown to Agartala on Saturday, where anger and grief swept among the locals.
The Uttarakhand government has taken serious action, and CM Pushkar Singh Dhami issued a stern warning against such incidents.
Police have arrested five accused in connection with the murder, while the main accused, Yagya Awasthi, remains absconding, with police suspecting his running away to Nepal. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest.
