The decision by the university has drawn sharp criticism from the students. The directive which was released through an office memorandum on November 29, stated that the students involved in such action would face “disciplinary” measures under the university’s regulations.
The student body has alleged that by framing democratic protests as “unlawful” or disruptive, the university administration has aligned with the fascist regime’s undemocratic policies and actions. They further argued that instead of taking action, the institution should foster political awareness and dialogues.
“Fraternity JMI demands the immediate withdrawal of this unconstitutional notice and reaffirmation from the authority safeguarding the rights of the students. We must not forget the university’s historic role in upholding justice, dignity and rights of the people”.
The ban was issued by the university authorities after a group of students raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The official notice released on Friday stated as follows, “No protests, dharnas, raising slogans against any constitutional dignitaries shall be allowed in any part of the university campus. Disciplinary action shall be initiated against any erring students as per provisions of the university rules”.
As per the report by ANI, the faculty members and department heads have been giving instructions to ensure that students under their purview are made aware of these guidelines.
