Bengaluru: After falling victim to a cheating of Rs 15 lakh worth of gold ornaments under the pretext of investment, a 19-year-old college student allegedly died by suicide at her home in Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar.

The student, Priyanka, was found hanging from the balcony of her house on November 29, leaving behind a note that alleged her college mate Dignth of convincing her to invest the gold ornaments, according to police. Notably, Diganth then took the gold ornaments but didn’t return the gold, though Priyanka made frequent requests.

The police investigation revealed that Diganth convinced Priyanka to invest in casinos, taking the gold ornaments and not returning them or their value to her. The Rajajinagar police have registered a case under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment of suicide) based on a complaint filed by Bharath Kumar and have launched an investigation into the matter, as per a report by Deccan Herald.

Digital arrests have been gaining the national headlines following a number of online arrests in which the fraudsters are posing as law enforcement officials and threatening the individuals.

A Karnataka native lost Rs 1.7 crore in an online scam where fraudsters posed as officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The victim reportedly received a phone call from an unknown number claiming to be from TRAI. The scammer told the victim that a mobile number registered under the latter’s name was being misused for illegal activities in Mumbai’s Andheri East.

The victim later received a WhatsApp video call from two individuals posing as Police Officer Rahul Kumar and CBI Officer Akanksha, showing fake documents of a case against the victim while demanding money to resolve the issue.

To prevent arrest and damage to reputation, the victim gave the transferred Rs1.7 crore through multiple RTGS transactions, only to realize later that he had fallen prey to the scam. Many such cases are being reported from across the country in the recent months.
