A group of Supreme Court lawyers protested against the higher court canteen’s decision to restrict its menu to only Navratri food during the 9-day festival. Navratra’s menu excludes meat and food prepared with onion, garlic, pulses, and grains.
The advocates have written to the presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Supreme Court Advocates—on-Record Association (SCAORA) to reverse the decision to restrict food choices. The lawyer’s group deems that the decision will be unprecedented and potentially problematic in the future.
This is the first time this year that the Supreme Court canteen has put restrictions on the food menu amid the Navratri festival. In the letter written to the associations, the lawyers mentioned that those who observed fast for 9 days would bring special food from home without any fuss. The current decision will set a wrong precedent for the future, lawyers wrote.

The lawyers stated that while they respect the observance of Navratra by their colleagues, however it should not be imposed on others who are dependent on the canteen for daily meals. The move opposes India’s pluralistic traditions, cautioning that allowing such restrictions could pave way for further impositions in the future.
The letter states, “Non serving of non-vegetarian or food with onion-garlic to cater to the wishes of a few is not in keeping with our pluralist traditions and would result in lack of respect for each other. Once this is allowed, it will open the flood gates to a lot of other impositions as well”.
