Instagram access was blocked by Turkey’s Internet Regulatory Board as a part of the criticism over the decision to censor condolences posts on the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. Turkey blocked all access to the most used social media platform without stating the duration of the ban leaving the Instagram app idle and inapproachable.
This is followed by the criticism by Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun that the Meta platform blocked several posts that mourned and extended condolences over the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s murder. The Turkish Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) disclosed the decision on its website.

Altun stated on X, “This is censorship, pure and simple.” Instagram has not adverted any policy violations for its actions he added. Meta platform has not responded yet to the ban on its Instagram platform and made no comments.
Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Hamas resistance group and his bodyguard was assassinated in Tehran, On Wednesday. They were killed after the building they were staying at was struck. Later condolences flooded the internet and other social media platforms. Following the incident, Meta’s Facebook and parent company Instagram censored several mourning posts and removed various tags and images.
Social media is now deluged with various comments and reactions over the ban on Instagram in Turkey over the condolences dispute.

On the other hand, people criticised the decision as they were asking to provide a proper explanation of the matter. Currently, no one will be able to use Meta’s Instagram on account of this sudden censorship.

However, Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdoğan has not yet spoken about the duration of the ban which has been followed by the recent comments from a Turkish communications official expressing strong disapproval of the platform for its decision to block condolence posts on the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.
