After a magnificent battle against Kerala in domestic cricket, Vidarbha grabbed the Ranji Trophy on Sunday. They defeated Kerala on the basis of the first-innings lead on the fifth and final day of the summit clash at their home ground. However, Kerala, the first-time finalists, fought hard, but the Vidarbhas were a step ahead in their incredible hard work and discipline throughout the year. They have not only clinched the Ranji Trophy but also became the runner-up in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Karun Nair, a Keralite’s unbeaten 132 had helped the Vidarbha to take a commanding lead of 286 runs over Kerala in the Ranji Trophy final. Praising the stupendous performance displayed by both the team, Thiruvanathapuram Congress MP Shashi Tharoor wrote on X, “Ah I love India! A Keralite playing for Vidarbha is dismissed by a Vidarbhaite playing for Kerala, stumped by wicket-keeper whose district nearly went to Karnataka…. and we are all one, united in celebration of what we all have in common, rather than what divides us. Jai Hind!”

Shashi Tharoor in his post highlighted the diversity and unity, the Indian cricket withholds. He had pointed out that in the final match, coincidently, Karun Nair, Keralite who is representing Vidarbha was dismissed by Aditya Sarwate, a Vidarbha, who himself was playing for the Kerala team. In addition to it, Jitesh Sharma, the wicket keeper who stumped Nair was from district that nearly became part of Karnataka. The politician’s comment emphasises the fact that, despite the regional diversity, all are united in the name of the game.
35-year-old Sarwate had switched from Vidarbha to Kerala after the last Ranji trophy season. Meanwhile, Karun Nair had revealed that how he very easily could have been on the other side of the match if things had went differently earlier. While speaking to a Malayalam channel, he said, “There were discussions about it. When I was sure I was going to leave Karnataka, I was looking at my options. There was some talk about it, but it didn’t go forward.”
“I had offered myself to KCA, but it didn’t go forward,” explained Karun. “At the same time, I got the offer from Vidarbha. I wasn’t in a situation to wait, as I wasn’t in a best spot. I wanted to clear my mind and that was only possible by joining a team. So I joined Vidarbha.”
