A 22-year-old YouTuber called Ishan Sharma has once again made headlines. After shocking Ashneer Grover, the young man has shared his opinion on the American tip system which has divided the internet.

Recalling his experience at a restaurant in the United States, Ishan said that he had ordered a crepe, club sandwich, and panini for $45 and paid $50 in cash. The YouTuber stated that when he asked for his change, the waitress replied, “You have to pay the tip” before leaving.

However, Ishan was not done. When he asked if he was mandatory, the waitress “ignored” him. “And my friends (a local) felt guilty for not paying atleast 20% tip!” remarked Ishan.

Calling the tipping system in New York a “scam” and describing his experience as “insane,” the young man riled up netizens who were not in support or agreement with his actions.

While one X user went on to accuse the YouTuber of being the “reason why the globe is becoming racist against Indians,” another observed, “Pretty sad to see young, educated and high earning Indians continue to drive this low abundance mindset behavior.”

Another X user stated, “15-20% tip is a customary social custom in the USA. When in Rome do as a Romans do. If you strongly feel that tipping is wrong then don’t order food at a sit down restaurant.”

However, there were some who agreed with him. “I don’t know about America; but shouldn’t tips be given as a way of saying thank you but as a compulsion,” said a netizen.

Notably, in the US, the standard tip for servers is typically around 15-20% of the total bill. While the minimum wage in the country is $7.25 per hour, many employers in the service industry pay below the fixed rate. As a result, a significant portion of the servers’ income comes from tips, which is why not paying one is usually seen as rude and impolite.

At the same time, the tip culture receives plenty of criticism from US citizens themselves. And Indians aren’t the only ones shocked by it. Many outsiders, especially European tourists, find the system confusing and unnecessary.
