Once Infosys' Narayana Murthy Applied For A Job In Wipro. Then...

Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, commonly known as N. R. Narayana Murthy, renowned Indian entrepreneur and the co-founder of Infosys, a global leader in consulting, technology, and outsourcing solutions, shared in a CNBC-TV18 interview on Saturday that he had applied for a position at Wipro in the past, only to be rejected. This rejection played a pivotal role in the establishment of Infosys, which eventually became one of Wipro”s major competitors in the IT industry. Azim Premji, the former chairman of Wipro, later admitted to Murthy that not hiring him was a significant mistake.

The 77-year-old entrepreneur recounted Premji”s acknowledgment, stating, “Azim once confided in me that one of his biggest regrets was declining to hire me.”

Murthy expressed the belief that if Wipro had hired him, the trajectories of both his career and Wipro as a company would have taken a different course.

In 1981, Murthy went on to found Infosys with the support of six friends and an initial capital of ₹10,000, provided by his wife and accomplished author, Sudha Murty.

A graduate from the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, and later earning a master”s degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Murthy”s professional journey began with a stint at IIM Ahmedabad as a chief systems programmer. Under his leadership, Infosys rapidly evolved into a global powerhouse, offering innovative IT solutions to clients worldwide.

After leading the company as its charismatic and visionary founder for over three decades, Murthy announced his retirement as the Executive Chairman of Infosys in 2011.

Before retiring and taking the title chairman emeritus of Infosys, he had previously served as the chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), president, and chief mentor of the company.

Murthy”s spouse, Sudha Murty, holds the roles of an educator, author, and philanthropist, serving as the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, and they have two children: a son named Rohan Murty and a daughter named Akshata Murty. In June 2013, Rohan joined Infosys in the capacity of an executive assistant to his father, but he concluded his tenure with the company in June 2014. Akshata Murty married British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in 2009.
