Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal Elected President Of Supreme Court Bar Association

Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal won the election for the post of president of the Supreme Court Bar Association in an election held today. This is his fourth term as president of the highest bar in the country. Previously, he was elected twice in the 1990s and once in the 2000s. Advocate Sibal, who has a legal career spanning more than five decades, was earlier associated with the Indian National Congress and served as a union minister. In his last Parliament stint, he was a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier in the day, the speech advocate Sibal delivered has gone viral, in which he remembered about his entry to the Supreme Court premises as junior advocate in 1973. “A young man, with no senior. A young man, with no clients. So if some people feel that I don”t understand what young men go through, I think that they should think twice,” Advocate Sibal can be heard in the video.

He also talked about his immigrant life in two room set in Delhi after his ancestors moved from Lahore to Delhi.

Kapil Sibal was challenged by the incumbent Adish Aggarwala and four others- Pradeep Kumar Rai, Priya Hingorani, Tripurari Ray and Neeraj Srivastava.

Kapil Sibal, born on August 8, 1948, received his schooling from St. John”s High School in Chandigarh, followed by an undergraduate degree in History from St. Stephen”s College, Delhi. He then pursued law at the University of Delhi and later completed his LL.M. from Harvard Law School.

Sibal”s legal career spans over five decades, during which he has earned a reputation for his eloquence and deep understanding of constitutional and commercial law. Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1983, he has represented numerous high-profile clients and has been involved in landmark cases. Notable among these are the Vodafone tax case (2012), where the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Vodafone, impacting foreign investment in India; the Aadhaar case (2018), which upheld the validity of Aadhaar but imposed usage restrictions; the Triple Talaq case (2017), which deemed the practice unconstitutional; the 2G Spectrum case (2010), a significant corruption scandal; and the Ayodhya case (2019), a critical religious and historical dispute.

Beyond his legal achievements, Sibal has had a significant political career. A key member of the Indian National Congress, he has served as Union Minister in various capacities, including Minister of Science and Technology, Minister of Human Resource Development, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Minister of Law and Justice. In 2014, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha representing Uttar Pradesh, where he is known for his articulate speeches and contributions to policy-making and legislative debates.

On a personal note, Sibal is married and has two sons. He is also a passionate poet, having published several works in English and Hindi.
