Former India all-rounder and 2011 World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh hailed Karnataka”s Prakhar Chaturvedi for breaking his 24-year-old record in the Cooch Behar Trophy final.

Chaturvedi smashed an unbeaten 404 off 638 deliveries, including 46 boundaries and three fours, against Mumbai to become the first player in the Cooch Behar Trophy final to score 400 runs. In the process, he surpassed Yuvraj Singh”s record of 358 runs in the Cooch Behar Trophy final for Punjab, to record the highest individual score in over two decades.

The former India all-rounder took note of Chaturvedi”s achievement and hailed him saying, “Very happy to see this! Records are meant to be broken and I”m glad to see the future of Indian cricket in safe hands”.

In the Cooch Behar Trophy final of 1999, Yuvraj had hammered 358 off 404 deliveries, after the entire Bihar team posted 357 runs. Meanwhile, in 2024, Mumbai were bowled out for 380 runs after opting to bat. Later, Chaturvedi”s brilliance helped Karnataka post a total of 890/8 and clinch victory on first innings lead.

However, the highest individual score in the tournament of 451 not out, still belongs to Maharashtra”s Vijay Zol for his magnificent knock against Assam in the 2011-12 season.

“The boy has to go through a lot. He was struggling to make it into the state U-19 team. Not many people believed in his ability. He has been a very good player for us,” his former coach Jeshwant told the Indian Express.

“Not only U-19, he was not selected for U-16 also. We had to make a presentation in front of the selectors to make them believe that he is a quality cricketer. I understand there is lots of competition. You can’t blame the selectors. To see the ability of a player, a coach or a selector must have a vision, you can’t rely on stats, even a computer can do that. Prakhar was performing but was not getting picked; they would give various reasons. Now he has shown what he is made of,” he added.
