England will face Spain in the final of Euro 2024 at Olympiastadion Berlin this Sunday. It was the end of the road for Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands as an injury time goal from substitute and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins put the English in front.
When Paris Saint-German’s Xavi Simons brought the Netherlands front with a thunderbolt beating English Jordan Pickford, it seemed like the Dutch is going to go back to their glorious days when Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Dennis Bergkamp and Frank Rijkaard thrived and took the Oranje to the football glory in the last quarter of 20th century. That screamer from Xavi Simons, his first goal in the Euro, which was created at the seventh minute from the enough space he was given after he collected the ball from England’s Declan Rice, did not survive for more than 10 minutes as England’s all time goalscorer Harry Kane converted a penalty into an equaliser.
Then the game went on for another hour without any breakthrough. But Ollie Watkins’s late goal caused heartbreak for the Dutch and England advanced to the last stop: the final of Euro 2024. It was interesting to listen post match to Watkins who scored England’s winner in which he said that the forward had already had conversation with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer about setting him up for a goal when they both go out to play in the semis.
And now the Three Lions will play their first ever final of a major tournament in a foreign land, and this will be their second consecutive final after Gareth Southgate’s men lost to Italy last time when the tournament was hosted by 11 different UEFA countries and the final was played at home, at Wembley Stadium.
