Haryana Govt To Welcome Vinesh Phogat As Olympic Medallist

Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Sani on Thursday announced that wrestler Vinesh Phogat who has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics final, will be welcomed and facilitated like Olympic medallist.

He said that she would be rewarded the same reward that the state government offers to Olympic Games silver medallists. Meanwhile, India’s ace wrestler has announced her retirement from the sport following the Paris Olympic disqualification. Phogat said that she did not have the strength to continue.

Haryana Chief Minister announcing the decision on X, wrote “Our brave daughter of Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, performed brilliantly and entered the finals of the Olympics. Due to some reasons, she may not have been able to play the final of the Olympics but she is a champion for all of us.”

On Wednesday, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg women’s wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024 after she was found overweight by 100 grams. As per the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Vinesh breached the weight limit and was disqualified as per the rules.

According to the state’s sports policy, the Haryana government offers Rs 6 crore to gold medallists in the Olympic games, Rs 4 crore to silver medallists, and Rs 2.5 crore to bronze medal winners.

On Tuesday, Phogat scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman grappler to reach the gold medal bout in the 50kg event. She was scheduled to take on the United State’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the gold medal match.

Vinesh has filed an appeal requesting to be awarded a joint silver medal. She is replaced by Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Vinesh defeated in the semifinals. However, Lopez ultimately lost to Hildebrandt in the championship match.
