India Gears Up To Host 2036 Olympics, Says PM Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India is preparing with full strength to host the 2036 Olympic Games, underlining the country’s growing confidence and capability in organising major global sporting events.
He made these remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 72nd National Volleyball Championship, which is being held in Varanasi, via video conference.
According to the Prime Minister, India has gained valuable experience over the past decade by successfully hosting several international sporting events.
He noted that more than 20 major global tournaments have been organised across different Indian cities in recent years. These include the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Hockey World Cup, and several high-profile international chess tournaments.
This experience, he said, has helped strengthen India’s sports infrastructure and organisational skills.
PM Modi also highlighted that India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, calling it another important milestone in the country’s sporting journey.
He added that preparations for the 2036 Olympics are already underway, reflecting India’s long-term vision to become a major global sports destination.
Meanwhile, organisers have expressed confidence that they can avoid the problems and setbacks seen during India’s last hosting of the Commonwealth Games.
However, they also acknowledge that several challenges remain for a country that is now openly pursuing its ambition to host the Olympic Games in the future.
Ahmedabad, located in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, was confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in November, marking a major step in India’s growing push to stage global sporting events.
The 72nd National Volleyball Championship, being held from January 4 to January 11, has drawn participation from over 1,000 players representing 58 teams from across the country.
