Jay Shah Likely To Become Youngest ICC Chairman And BCCI President In 2028: Report

Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) honorary secretary Jay Shah has been non-committal towards taking up the role of the ICC Chairman, in an election which is slated to take place in November. If he does, then he will be the youngest elected chairman of the governing council and will be elected unopposed ahead of the incumbent Greg Barclay.

The current ICC Chairman, Barclay, holds the position for the last four years and is eligible to extend it for another year. The New Zealander rose to the role after getting support from the BCCI

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the discussion for the ICC Chairman position will not be on the agenda when the governing council holds its Annual Conference in Colombo later this month.

The new tenure for the ICC Chairman has been amended from existing three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. It is likely that if Shah is elected for the role then he will serve a three-year role which makes him eligible to become the BCCI President in 2028.

Shah has turned out the be a key figure for BCCI in recent years. India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has highlighted his contributions despite the influential role held by his father.

“Many people criticize Jay Shah, focusing on his father’s political position rather than his contributions,” Gavaskar told India Today. “However, what Jay Shah has achieved—like bringing in the Women’s Premier League, ensuring equal pay for the Women’s team as the Men’s, increasing fees for IPL players, and significantly boosting incentives—is commendable. Unfortunately, some refuse to give him credit due to a political agenda.”
