Former Indian cricket team captain and legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi died on Monday at the age of 77. He was a show-stopper who took 266 wickets in 67 Tests between the years of 1967 and 1979 for team India. In his 12-year-long career, he along with Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan, formed the most terrific spin quartet in the history of Indian cricket.

Mr Bedi was born on September 25, 1946 in Amritsar and was initially a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He played Test cricket for India from 1966 to 1979 and formed part of the famous Indian spin quartet. He was the key player in India’s first ODI victory and played last ODI on June 16, 1979 against Sri Lanka. In the 1975 World Cup match, his clever bowling of 12-8-6-1 held East Africa to 120 runs, says reports.

 

He owned a distinguished domestic cricket career too, especially with the Delhi team. He became a commentator and continued engaging in cricket world even after retirement, with his outspoken opinions. The BCCI commemorated Mr Bedi”s dedicated contributions to the Indian era of cricket and mourned at his “sad demise”. Indian actor and producer Sunil Shetty took to his X handle and said that Mr Bedi was a man “who was adored not just for his cricketing prowess but also for the honesty and integrity he carried in his heart”.

“Deeply saddened by the demise of the legendary spinner and former captain of the Indian cricket team Bishan Singh Bedi Ji. Bedi Ji will live in our memories not only through his contribution to the cricketing world but also as the master of crafty bowling who could weave magic on the pitch”, wrote Union Home Minister Amit Shah on X (formerly Twitter). “My heartfelt condolences to his family members and his fans in this hour of grief”, he added.

The Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Anurag Thakur expressed that he is extremely saddened to hear the “passing of the legendary India spinner”. “His contributions to Indian cricket and his artistry on the field will always be remembered”, added Mr Thakur. Indian former international cricketer Suresh Raina said that, Mr Bedi”s “impact on the sport is immeasurable”. The Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the meantime observed the legend for his “exceptional talent as a spin bowler left an indelible mark on the cricket world”.
