Manchester United have confirmed that Erik ten Hag has signed a contract extension until June 2026. Initial reports suggested that the 54-year-old Dutchman could be replaced at Old Trafford, but both he and the club have agreed to new terms for the next two years.
Since Ten Hag’s arrival from Ajax in the summer of 2022, Man Utd have enjoyed some success under the Dutchman. In 2022/23, the Red Devils finished third and won the EFL Cup – Man Utd’s first major honour in six years.
“Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined,” Ten Hag told the club’s official website.
“However, we must also be clear that there is still lots of hard work ahead to reach the levels expected of Manchester United, which means challenging for English and European titles. In my discussions with the club, we have found complete unity in our vision for reaching those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”
“With two trophies in the past two seasons, Erik has reinforced his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football. While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes,” Manchester United’s new sporting director Dan Ashworth said.
The last season proved to be a difficult campaign for Ten Hag. The club suffered several injuries in 2023/24, with first-choice defenders Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez missing much of the season, contributing to United’s struggles.
United conceded 58 goals, their most in a Premier League season, and suffered nine home defeats across all competitions, their most in a single campaign since recording the same number of losses in 1973/74.
The Red Devils were also knocked out in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and an eighth-placed finish last season was their lowest in Premier League history.
However, the campaign ended on a positive note as United won the FA Cup, beating rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on 25 May, a result that also meant they qualified for the UEFA Europa League in 2024/25.
