FIFA World Cup 2030 will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal along with three other countries in order to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the first edition of the tournament, the football governing body announced on Wednesday.
Six countries from three different continent are selected as the hosts for the most anticipating tournament. Spain, Morocco and Portugal will co-host the tournament while Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina will stage the opening the matches. Thus, all six teams will get automatically qualified to the 48-team tournament. FIFA has announced that the first game will be played at the Estadio Centenário in Montevideo, the site of the tournament’s first ever final.
“In a divided world, FIFA and football are uniting,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “The FIFA Council, representing the entire world of football, unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup, whose first edition was played in Uruguay in 1930, in the most appropriate way”
In the 2030 edition, Morocco will host the global tournament for the first time. Morocco will become the first North African nation to host the official game. Uruguay hosted the first tournament in 1930. And thus, Uruguay will host 2030 tournament in recognition of their role as hosts as well as winners of the opening match.
The 2026 World cup will be the only other tournament to be played in more than two countries, with Canada, US and Mexico co-hosting the event.
On Wednesday, soon after the soccer”s world governing body FIFA announced the hosts of 2030, Saudi Arabia announced its plan to bid to host the 2034 World Cup as FIFA invited countries in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to bid for 2034 tournamnet.
In the last edition of the World Cup, Argentina won the title in Qatar after defeating France in the penalty shoot-out.
