The Mumbai Indians lost 400,000 followers on X (formerly twitter) within an hour of announcing Hardik Pandya as the new captain ahead of the Indian Premiere League of 2024 season. The former Gujarat Titans captain will be taking over Rohit Sharma, who has five IPL title to his name.
Since his joining on the team in 2013 as the captain, Rohit Sharma has won IPL for record five times. Another player achieved that record was M. S. Dhoni. Dhoni won his fifth IPL title in 2023. Rohit Sharma took a break from Cricket after India’s heartbreaking loss in the 2023 World Cup final. He is set to return to the match in the 2-match Test series against South Africa which will start on December 26th.
Hardik Pandya made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians is now returning to the franchise after 2 years of captaining Gujarat Titans. Under his captaincy, the Gujarat Titans won the 2022 IPL against Rajasthan Royals. He was named player of the match in the final play after he won 3 wickets and 34 runs. During his second year as the team’s captain, Hardik Pandya led the team to finale in 2023, in which they lost to M. S. Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings.
Mumbai Indians’ Global Head of Performance, Mahela Jayawardene, described Hardik Pandya’s appointment as captain for IPL 2024 as “part of building a legacy and remaining true to MI’s philosophy of being future-ready.”
He emphasized that Mumbai Indians has a history of exceptional leadership figures, such as Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Ricky Ponting, and Rohit Sharma, who while leading the team to immediate success, also focused on strengthening it for the future. Jayawardene stated that it is in accordance with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya has been chosen as captain.
