Explosive batsman, the hitman Rohit Sharma walked back to the pavilion after scoring his maiden ODI double century during the seventh ODI of Australia’s tour of India in 2013, a broadcaster called him for a flash interview, who referred him as the ‘hitman’. And that’s how the story of hitman began.

And that wasn’t it. The name got popular soon after commentator Ravi Shastri used it once again during his mind-blowing performance. Soon after he hits a six to complete the double century, the commentator exploded with thrill, “What a way to bring up 200 in one day internationals, they call him hitman and he is arrived to the party”.

Rohit Sharma is known for his unique style of batting which is characterised by his ability to hit big shots and score runs quickly. His excellent timing, footwork and hand-eye coordination is exceptional. And this hitman holds the record for the highest individual score in One Day International (ODI) cricket with a score of 264 runs.

Rohit Sharma emerged from the Mumbai suburbs slowly rising to be one among the Indian batting greats. Each time he walks out to the field with bat, the word ‘talent’ features him amongst his fans and cricketing circle. With time and persistence, by 2010s he had become a colossus in white-ball cricket.

The man is also in charge of the most formidable league team in T20, Mumbai Indians of Indian Premier League (IPL). But the fans had to wait to get the glimpse of his talent. It was T20 World Cup in 2007 and CB series in Australia, Rohit Sharma started off his golden career with impressive contribution in the matches. But the skipper had to wait three more years to represent India in whites after missing out the chance to make his Test debut in 2010 against South Africa due to injury.

Rohit was unstoppable, he continued to take giant strides in the shortest formats of the game. He won six IPL titles in the first 15 edition of the tournament. After winning five titles under his captaincy for Mumbai Indians, he proved himself to be a methodical, studious and a calm leader. He has also proved his ability to lead by being an able deputy to Virat Kohli during limited overs formats in international cricket. And he won two titles in Kohli’s absence. He then became the men in charge in 2022.

Considering the astounding success of home team in the ODI World Cups, all eyes will be on India being the host. And besides opening the batting, veteran batter Rohit Sharma will lead the Men in Blue in this World Cup. The tournament will witness ten teams battle out for the grand trophy, which will kickstart on October 5.
