One of the most exciting seasons of Brazilian football league was concluded on Wednesday. Pele’s former club Santos was relegated for the first time in their 111 years history.

Santos was one among the three team, along with Sao Paulo and Flamengo, which was never been relegated. Five games without victory led to a terrible drop to 17th position with just 43 points.

Santo’s relegation following 2-1 home loss to Fortaleza was another setback for the club at the stadium. This defeat marked a somber note at the stadium where Pele’s funeral took place last year.

The relegation will mark a significant set-back to the club and thus a speedy bounce-back is necessary to bring back its historic glory.

Meanwhile, Bahia secured top spot with an astonishing win of 4-1 over Atletico Mineiro.

America Minerio, Coritiba and Goias was already assured of relegation from the 20-team division.

The football legend Pele, helped Santos to become one of the most famous clubs in world football. The club witnessed its golden era in the 1950s and 1960s which resulted in the win of 10 state and six Brazilian league titles.

The club”s victory saga includes bagging of Copa Libertadores, South American’s equivalent of the Champions League title in 1962 and 1963. The same year they won the Intercontinental Cup. The intercontinental Cup is the trophy played for by the top teams from Europe and South America.

In addition to Pele, Santos has also produced a host outstanding players including, former AC Milan striker Robinho, Brazil’s top scorer Neymar and Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.
