Team India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados to clinch their second title in the format.
Opting to bat, former India captain Virat Kohli played a cautious knock of 76 runs while he was well supported by Axar Patel’s 47, propelling the side to a record total of 176/7. In the chase, South Africa was restricted to 169/8 with Heinrich Klaasen top-scoring for his side with 52 runs.
“Well, this was my last T20 World Cup.. And.. This is exactly what we wanted to achieve. This is an amazing game. I was telling Rohit today when we went out to bat I was like.. one day you feel like you can’t get a run and then you come out and things happen. God is great. I bow my head in gratitude. I am really grateful that I was able to get the job done for the team on the day it mattered the most,” Kohli, who was adjudged the player of the match, said.
Following the victory, the T20 World Cup 2024 Champions received a sum of $2.45 million (INR 20.42 crore approx) from the International Cricket Council (ICC) while the runners-up South Africa took home a sum of $1.28 million (INR 10.67 crore approx).
Meanwhile, England and Afghanistan were knocked out in the semi-finals after losing to India and South Africa, respectively, bagged $787,500 each (INR 6.56 crore approx).
