Three-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s impeding decision for a Paris 2024 silver medal will be announced on August 16 at 6 pm (CET) after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) moved the verdict on Tuesday, the day when the announcement was actually scheduled.
The Sports Court cited the Article 18: “The Panel shall give a decision within 24 hours of the lodging of the application. In exceptional cases, this time limit may be extended by the President of the ad hoc Division if circumstances so require.”
For the unversed, the two-time World Championships bronze medallist was disqualified ahead of the final, for failing to meet her weight by a little over 100 gms. The premier Indian wrestler and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had appealed to the CAS for a joint silver medal alongside Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman.
In a statement issued by the CAS ahead of the hearing, it was stated that the applicant had sought an annulment of the decision.
The hearing at the Sports Court for her disqualification took place earlier last week at the ad hoc division set up at the Paris 2024. Vidushpat Singhania and Harish Salve represented the IOA at the hearing along with a skilled legal team from France, comprising Joelle Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim, and Charles Amson. It was learned that the hearing went as per procedure and took three-hours to conclude.
Vinesh had joined the hearing, which had representations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the technical committee of the United World Wrestling (UWW).
