Adding on to the buzz regarding renaming of India to Bharat, former Indian Cricket player Virender Sehwag has appealed to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to ensure that in this World Cup, players have Bharat on their jersey.

“I have always believed a name should be one which instils pride in us. We are Bhartiyas, India is a name given by the British & it has been long overdue to get our original name ‘Bharat’ back officially”, Sehwag wrote on X.

While saying this, he reposted an X post he made on India- Pakistan match where he had used hashtag “#BHAvsPAK’ instead of #INDvsPAK. He had later made references to other nations using their indigenous names during global tournaments in another post on X.

“In the 1996 World Cup, the Netherlands came to play in the World Cup in Bharat as Holland. In 2003, when we met them, they were in the Netherlands and continue to be so. Burma has changed the name given by the British back to Myanmar. And many others have gone back to their original names,” Sehwag said.

Virender Sehwag wrote “Team India Nahin #TeamBharat” on  the post in X congratulating the newly announced World Cup squad.

However, his tweets have gotten mixed reaction from the social media users.
