Angel Di Maria, considered to be one of the greatest football players of his generation and one of the greatest Argentine players of all time, has decided it hang his boots in international football. The “noodle”, as he is fondly called, will be playing his last most important tournament in 2024 Copa America, according to the player. This means Di Maria won”t be part of Argentina’s World Cup title defense in 2026.
Di Maria, who is known for his dribbling, playmaking skills and unique finishing, has been a permanent fixture in all the major tournaments in last 15 years for La Albiceleste since he made his debut for the Argentina senior team in a match against Paraguay in September 2028.
In his conversation to Todo Pasa, Di Maria disclosed a heartfelt conversation he had with Lionel Messi before departing from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2021/22 season. He expressed his great admiration for the current Inter Miami player with whom he spent time at Parc des Princes and Argentine national side.
He said, “I will leave the Argentina national team after Copa America — it’s over for me. I hugged Messi at PSG and told him: the only thing I”m grateful for is to have been able to play with you in a club, to be able to see you every day.”
The 35-year-old winger boasts 134 international caps and 29 goals, having played a pivotal role in Argentina”s 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup victories, scoring in both finals against Brazil and France, respectively.
Apart from Rosario Central in Argentina, Di Maria had played for various professional clubs in Portugal, Spain, England, France and Italy in his 18 year long professional club. The clubs include Benfica (his first club outside Argentina and current club), Real Madrid, Manchester United, PSG and Juventus.
He was part of the Argentina national side that won FIFA World Cup in 2022, Copa America in 2021 and CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2022.
