Amazon is set to make a breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) technology as the e-commerce giant has developed a new generative AI model that can process images and videos in addition to text. This will reduce Amazon’s dependence on Anthropic which is an AI startup.

According to a report by The Information, Amazon’s new AI model, code-named Olympus is a large language model (LLM) that can understand scenes in images and videos.

This means that customers will be able to search for specific scenes, such as a winning basketball shot, using simple text prompts. Olympus is expected to be announced at Amazon’s annual AWS re: Invent customer conference next week.

Also,  Amazon recently invested an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI. This investment was made to capitalise on generative AI technology.

However, with the development of Olympus, Amazon will be less reliant on Anthropic’s Claude chatbot which is a popular offering on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Amazon’s move is seen as an attempt to counter the perception that its competitors, such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, have taken a lead in developing generative AI.
