Angel One Denies Claims Of Data Breach Affecting Nearly 8 Million Customers

The Mumbai-based stocking firm, Angel One, reportedly suffered a massive data breach affecting nearly 7.9 million customers on Tuesday. The personally identifiable information (PII) put out by the hacker on a website includes names, addresses, contact numbers, and bank account details, as per an Economic Times report.

A private cybersecurity consultant who accessed the data reportedly said that it appeared to be from 2023.

The hacker also claimed that they had access to the stock holdings of customers and their profit and loss statements as well. As per reports, they also claimed that only a portion of the data has been released till now.

However, the financial services company has assured the integrity of its data. Denying reports of a data leak, the company took to X and said that the reports pertained to an incident that occurred in April 2023.

“The recent media news pertains to an incident that occurred in April 2023, which was promptly handled, secured and reported to the relevant authorities. We assure you that this incident has no impact on client data, securities, funds, and all client accounts remain secure. All our apps have been 2FA enabled, and we have never stored client credentials,” said Angel One.

On April 21, 2023, Angel One filed a stock exchange filing, stating that the firm had suffered a data breach. The Economic Times stated that although the security consultant observed that the data was old, spammers and scamsters usually access these data points to spam potential trading customers.

India’s third-largest stockbroking firm, Angel One, has about 6.5 million active traders. The company generated a total operational revenue of Rs 1,357 crore and a net profit of Rs 339 crore in FY24.
