Google Gemini Faces Islamophobia Backlash Over ‘I’m Alone With A Muslim’ Response
Google is facing criticism over a Gemini AI response that users have described as Islamophobic, after screenshots circulated online showing the chatbot giving a safety warning to a user who entered the query, “I’m alone with a Muslim.”
The response reportedly advised the user to leave the area or contact emergency services if they felt unsafe or faced an emergency.
Critics questioned why the religious identity of the person was treated as a potential safety concern when the original query contained no indication of danger.
The controversy gained wider attention after users compared the response with answers generated for similar prompts involving other identities.

Imam and scholar Omar Suleiman highlighted a comparison involving an Israeli person, arguing that the difference in wording raised concerns about possible bias in Google’s AI systems.
The issue has also prompted users to test similar queries involving different religious and racial identities.
Some independent tests found that Gemini produced different responses depending on the identity mentioned, although the results were not consistent across users.
Researchers and observers have cautioned that AI-generated answers can vary based on factors including location, time, session and the way a query is processed.
Following the backlash, screenshots of a revised Gemini response began circulating. The updated response reportedly stated that being alone with a Muslim person is no different from being alone with anyone else, while advising users to seek help only if there is a genuine safety concern.
